Over the past few years, more and more of the private schools have begun opening up their shows to students of all area schools.  We have had several students and parents ask us how we feel about this development.  So that everyone is clear about it, this is what we think about Perrysburg students being in other schools’ productions:

We do not condone this practice.  Our theatre program at Perrysburg is one of the strongest in the area (and the state).  Perrysburg students have a tremendous opportunity to learn about all aspects of theatre by being involved in our productions.  We feel that Perrysburg students should be taking advantage of our program – whether it is on stage or behind the scenes – for several reasons:

1.      By working with the directors here, we get to know you and you get to know us.  You get to know what our expectations are and develop your skills as part of first rate productions.  Some people have claimed that freshmen never make the fall play.  This is not true.  Freshmen have made the fall play, but they are at a disadvantage simply due to the fact that we don’t know them (their talent, work ethic, etc.) as well as the upperclassmen.  Auditioning for every show is the first step in developing a relationship.
2.      At Perrysburg, we stress the technical aspects of our productions as much as the performing ones.  We feel it is vital part of a quality theatre education for our students to work on various technical crews in order to gain an appreciation for the entire process of producing a work.  Therefore, if you are not cast in a show, we feel you should take the opportunity to work on a technical crew.
3.      Each of the three productions at Perrysburg is unique by design.  Each show requires slightly different styles of acting.  Being involved in as many productions as you can gives you a chance to develop completely as a performer (not just musical theatre acting style or a realistic acting style).
4.      Some people feel that the bigger the part, the better.  We don’t subscribe to this idea.  It is not the size of the role; it is the quality that is important.  Taking full advantage of your opportunities here—even if it means a small role—will result in a well-rounded, high-quality, diverse theater experience which we feel is more beneficial to you, as well as your peers.
5.      Finally, we feel that there is something to be said for being loyal to your school and community.  Athletes do not pick and choose what school they want to represent. We hope you choose to participate in Perrysburg Theatre.

If you have any questions about our position, please feel free to contact Mr. Gentry or Ms. Wagner.
